Question
Can I use the electronic EHS cable instead of the mechanical remote lifter for my wireless headset (plantronics or jabra)?

Answer

This is one of our most frequently asked question by users that want to avoid using the mechanical lifter for either Jabra or Plantronics wireless headsets.  There are a number of factors that you should consider before using the Electronic Hook Switch (EHS) cable.     Here are some pros and cons to the EHS cable.

PROS

  • Nothing mechanical to ever worry about breaking down
  • Complete ringtone integration with phone
  • Seamless connection for answering/disconnect

CONS

  • Cumbersome setup (phone dependent)
  • Requires both proper configuration of wireless headset and phone
  • Not compatible with all phones

The bottom line is that not all phones support this newer feature and you will need to review the EHS guide to see if your phone is listed as compatible.   When using a wireless headset you can answer or disconnect by pressing the headset's answer/disconnect button as long as you use a Remote Lifter or EHS cable with your wireless headset. For additional details on compatibility with the  EHS cables download either of the Electronic Hook Switch guides:

Manually answering calls without the EHS Adapter

Notes: If you do not wish to purchase the EHS Adapter you will need to manually answer all calls from the phone first before talking on the headset.  The wireless headsets has no ability to answer nor disconnect without this Adapter. If you do not plan to be roaming around the office this a good option when looking to save money. You can always add the EHS Adapter afterwards if you find it inconvenient to run back to the phone when it rings.

Our research and customer feedback also suggests that there are some other aspects worth considering when deciding which lifter to get if you still deciding on which wireless headset to get.  Our findings suggest that the Jabra lifter (GN1000) tends to hold up better for the long-term and heavy usage.  The Plantronics lifter (HL-10) tends to slowly degrade with time and can take longer to "answer" calls.  If you anticipate infrequent or little usage of a wireless headset then you may not see this difference but if you anticipate to use your wireless headset frequently then the Jabra lifter will serve you better. Unfortunately you can not mix-and-match the lifters and headsets (ie Jabra Lifter with a Plantronics wireless headset).  You have to buy the lifter of the respective manufacturer.
